A certificate of analysis answers up to three separate questions — identity, purity and quantity — and many answer only purity. Purity and identity are not the same test

An HPLC trace showing 99% area under one peak establishes that the material is overwhelmingly one substance. It does not establish which substance. Any peptide of similar hydrophobicity elutes in a similar place, and a truncated or scrambled sequence can look clean. Purity without identity is a statement about homogeneity, not about what you have.

What mass spectrometry adds

A mass spectrum measures molecular weight directly. For retatrutide, an observed mass consistent with the expected value is the single most informative line on a certificate, because it distinguishes the intended molecule from a clean impostor. A certificate reporting only UV purity has not answered the identity question at all.

Quantity is the one most often quietly missed

Content determination — how much peptide is actually in the vial — is a third measurement, and it is where certificates most often fall short of their own stated specification. It matters because a vial can be pure, correctly identified, and still contain materially less than its label states.

A generic certificate for the compound proves nothing about the container in front of you. The document should name a batch, and that batch should be the one printed on the vial. Batch-matched documentation is the difference between a certificate and a brochure.
