About the Melanotan I peptide
Melanotan I is a linear thirteen-residue analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone in which norleucine replaces methionine at position 4 and D-phenylalanine replaces L-phenylalanine at position 7. It was first reported by Sawyer, Hruby and Hadley at the University of Arizona in 1980 and later took the INN afamelanotide. It is studied as a melanocortin receptor ligand. We sell it as freeze-dried powder in a 10mg vial, for laboratory research only.

Melanotan I in the research literature
Melanotan I began as a structure-activity exercise. Sawyer, Hruby and Hadley at the University of Arizona swapped methionine at position 4 for norleucine, removing the oxidation-prone sulphur, and L-phenylalanine at position 7 for D-phenylalanine, and reported the resulting [Nle4, D-Phe7]-alpha-MSH in PNAS in 1980 as a potent melanotropin with prolonged biological activity. The Hadley 2006 review in Peptides sets out the lineage from that paper through the Arizona melanotan programme and on to the cyclic Melanotan II. The peptide later took the INN afamelanotide and is studied as a ligand of the melanocortin receptors, MC1R above all, in melanocyte cell culture and binding assays.
The Minder 2017 review in Clinical Pharmacokinetics is the main account of its pharmacokinetics. Habbema and colleagues, 2017, is the critical paper: a review of the risks of unregulated use of alpha-MSH analogues, which is why this vial is sold for laboratory work only.
Melanotan I vs MT-2: which to order
Melanotan I is linear: thirteen residues, 1,646.8 Da, PubChem CID 16197727. Melanotan II is cyclic: seven residues closed by a lactam bridge, about 1,024 Da, PubChem CID 92432, CAS 121062-08-6. Both are alpha-MSH analogues and bind melanocortin receptors, but MT-1 is the closer copy of the native hormone and the one with an INN, afamelanotide, licensed in the UK as the Scenesse implant. This research vial is not that product and carries no marketing authorisation.
The label shows Melanotan I and 10mg, and the lab report, once published on this page, will show the measured mass against 1,646.8 Da, which rules out an MT-2 vial mislabelled as MT-1.
